As investigations continue into the scale of the SolarWinds breach, business enterprises worldwide are taking the opportunity to review internal network security operations and consider the safety of the software providers in their supply chain.

What happened and what can we learn from it?

Initial reports of the breach began to circulate in mid-December 2020 as it was revealed that SolarWinds customers using its Orion suite of products had been compromised by a software update that contained malicious code. This enabled  hackers to gain access to both business and government networks around the world.

As many as 18,000 SolarWinds customers are reported to be affected, with cyber attackers able to access networks and communicate with command-and-control servers over a period of months, mimicking legitimate SolarWinds traffic. These attacks have caused significant disruption to SolarWinds customers, many have been forced to take immediate action, disabling Solarwinds monitoring and network configuration management products, whilst performing security checks to establish what other servers or resources may have been breached.  The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an emergency directive urging federal civilian agencies to disconnect SolarWinds Orion products and review their networks for compromises.

Whilst attacks such as this are difficult to protect against, companies need to look closely at their network management processes to ensure that freeware tools, legacy configuration management scripts, and their network management tool provider’s security standards align with their own.
